CORAL GREENHOUSe NAMED As One of AUSTRALIA’S BEST SCULPTURE TRAILS
The Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA) is thrilled its ‘Coral Greenhouse’ at John Brewer Reef has taken home silver at the Australian Street Art Award’s – in the Best Sculpture Park or Trail category, which recognises the most outstanding outdoor art experiences around the country.
The ‘Coral Greenhouse’ was created by world-renowned artist Jason deCaires Taylor to help inspire and educate people about art, science and culture while enjoying a memorable experience on the Great Barrier Reef and this award cements that achievement.
MOUA Deputy Chair Adam Smith said the ‘Coral Greenhouse’ is the epitome of a great sculpture trail and is even more special because it is the only underwater museum in the Southern Hemisphere.
“These artworks are globally significant. They are more than a piece of art, they are a conversation starter around reef conservation and the future of the Great Barrier Reef,” Dr Smith said.
“We have undertaken coral planting initiatives and continually monitor the site, and after a little over two years in the water there is tremendous growth and increases in fish diversity at the ‘Coral Greenhouse’,” he said.
